In case you haven't noticed. My names Molly and I'm a feminist. I feel very passionate about this topic, so I thought that my first post should be about feminism. A feminist is someone who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes and that's exactly who I am.
I first discovered the true meaning of a feminist during one of my first sociology lessons. Prior to this I often wondered why women was less powerful in society, with questions like, 'Why do you always see business men and not business women on TV?' And many more. Although I never thought about it in depth, like I never cared about it that much. The questions crossed my mind but I never thought to try and answer them. This was until I started sociology in year 10.
By choosing sociology as an option it has answered so many questions which I had left unanswered. I have became more involved in politics and I can say I am a feminist. I often wonder why more people are not feminists. All we want is gender equality. Surely that's not a bad thing? It honestly infuriates me. We live in a patriarchal society where women are denied promotions as their companies are in fear that they will give birth to a child one day and men are still being paid more in some professions! We live in a society where men are seen less of a man for crying and women are see less of a woman for being aggressive. A society where men are valued less for being a parent and where adverts like 'Fairy washing up liquid' are using stereotypical gender roles; of the male working and the woman cooking and cleaning. The list goes on and on and on...
Emma Watson, my idol, has recently started a campaign, He for She. She has invited men from all over the world to identify as a feminist and fight for gender equality. If you do want to join, you can checkout the He for She website and I hope you join the debate.
I am a FEMINIST and I am not scared to show it. I want gender equality.
